In the Video entitled “Why I left BuzzFeed”, Safiya Nygaard explains the reasons for which she left BuzzFeed. There have been many requests from behalf her viewers to make a video for which she made this decision. Right at the beginning of the video she clearly explains that this video is not meant to place BuzzFeed in a negative side. The video is just about her explaining a few reasons for which she made this decision. She left BuzzFeed at the end of January this year. Her job there was a Video Producer and worked since April of 2015 until January 2017 and her main work with the company was a show called “Lady Like” which lasted the most of her career. She explains that the reasons for which she made the decision of leaving BuzzFeed should not affect anyone and that this is just a personal choice. She explains that her reasons are not intended to affect anybody that is currently working or might work in the future with BuzzFeed. She also added that the Company is very large, with many departments and various teams. Her experience with them was just a separate one and that it was just herself that had went through these bad experiences. She cares so much about the image of BuzzFeed that she mentions one more time and a few more times in the video that the reason for the Video is not to trash the company in any way. Of course that there are people who don’t like everything about the company they work for and this applies to everyone. This video applies to this rule in the way that she was unlucky to go through some unpleasant experiences. After explaining all of this, Safiya Nygaard continues to explain the reasons for which she left BuzzFeed.
The first reasons that she mentioned was entitled “Transparency”, this was also the main reason for which she left them. Safiya explains that she was not allowed to have an open line of communication between her and her viewers. This included replying to comments on YouTube of the videos that she made herself, which she loves very much. She added that it was no problem to discuss with her fans on other social media platforms, but she was not allowed to reply to YouTube comments. This rule that BuzzFeed created implied that she would not be allowed to reply to any comments. Even if there was a funny comment or a misconception, she was not allowed to clarify that specific viewer or respond to a funny joke. Another thing that she added regarding the lack of transparency was that she was not able to clarify that many of the videos that BuzzFeed uploaded had nothing to do with her. For this reason many people were asking her to explain certain things about the videos but she was not able to explain anything, especially because she had nothing to do with the videos. The lack of transparency was also giving her credit for others people work because the viewer’s thought that she had made those videos when in fact they were made in other countries all over the world. Another thing that bothered her was the fact that within the Company there weren’t many meetings regarding “Lady Like” which left her with many questions unanswered. She continues to explain how her work with the company and especially with “Lady Like” was put under cover and that she was not allowed to gain more power over it. However, when she expressed this with the Company, their response was not what she expected. Another big reason for her decision to leave was that she could not evolve in her career. Her name and work would be promoted but that would be it. Everything that she had done was given to BuzzFeed with no rights over it.
The video is to be appreciated that her intention was not to place BuzzFeed in a negative side. Some people might take her reasons personal but that is everyone’s decision. If you liked this article, be sure to check our other article about the SourceFed company being shut down.
